A Slice of Humble Pie

As a young, ambitious social worker, I worked hard to grow professionally while achieving goals. After a year of focusing, learning and experience, my statistics were good, client satisfaction was high and my small county rated highly in state ranks in child welfare. To be sure, I was fortunate to be part of a great … Continue reading A Slice of Humble Pie

Forming a Tribe

A lesson I learned over 30 years ago still rings true today. We need to belong. We need a tribe. We need others to help us get through the hard things in life. We were not meant to struggle alone. High School is hard. Belonging to a tribe helps us to navigate through, not only … Continue reading Forming a Tribe

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a very bright sign, bathed in rainbow colors. As I turned to investigate the loud image, two words called out my … Continue reading Brain Freeze

How to Survive a Bad Boss

I started working when I was 15 years old. My first job was McDonald's.  I liked the idea of earning extra money, and I didn't mind the work.  But my boss was a perpetually angry man whose rants and insults drove many employees, including me to seek employment elsewhere. I mean, who could work for … Continue reading How to Survive a Bad Boss

Welcome to my blog

Several years ago, as I watched so many social workers leave the profession due to burn out, compassion fatigue and lack of support, I wanted to find a way to reach out to them with understanding and encouragement.  The people who daily pick up and carry other’s trauma do so because they see that as their life’s purpose.  I wanted to celebrate them and let them know they were never alone.
