Are you in the Mood for a good old-fashioned whodunit?
I was provided with an Advanced Reader Copy of Do You See What I See? by Peter Swanson, and I must admit I enjoyed every minute of it. I have such fond memories of my middle and high school years, curling up with Agatha Christie, trying to beat Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple in solving the mystery. I collected every book Christie wrote. I think those memories are the reason the “locked room mystery” aspect of this novella really appealed to me. At just 87 pages, it’s a quick read—I devoured it in one sitting.
A group of writers and their spouses gather at the home of a famous but unlikeable author for Christmas. Each guest carries not only a gift but also a secret. Their paths have enmeshed over the years, creating the tension of “who hated whom more?”
The story is narrated by Nicholas, the only guest who didn’t run in the circle. Seemingly unknown to the other household members, he was hired to assist the famous author. Alcohol and behavior changes had affected the author’s ability to finish his new work.
When the author is murdered, the truth ebbs out slowly through a series of typed statements. Each new statement unravels another mystery until the reader realizes nothing is as it seemed.
I gave the book four stars, not only for the entertainment but also for the memories.
Do you See What I See will be released in late Fall 2026.
