After the pain
The tears
The cries for momma
You lie in a strange bed
In a strange room
In a strange house
With strangers.
Your mind reaches out for truth
Desperately clawing at memories past
Seeking the answer to your only question
What did I Do?
You were ripped from your mother’s arm
As you screamed out her name
The echoes still reverberating
In your heart.
She didn’t respond
Reach back
Call out to you.
She just kept on sleeping.
The lady was nice
In this strange home.
They told you
you were safe
You would be ok
They would take care of you
The lady was nice
But she was not your mom
You look at the window
Watching the sun sink
Into the horizon
And you knew at that moment
You would never go home
Again.

Superb! You have penned the pain of a child who has been relocated to a foster home. Even though the child is assured of a safe home, he is never among his own and that kind of haunts him.

foster care is a necessary evil … evil coz it’s not home, everything is alien, and coz they are not always safe places 😦

As a child protection agent, there were times when I had to place children in foster homes. These were as carefully vetted as we could manage, with both pre- and post-placement unannounced home visits, and fortunately, they were short-term, as we always found a competent grandparent or aunt & uncle who could take the child in.

Yes, there are a plethora of wonderful, caring foster parents. However, to a traumatized child, it is very scary to leave even a bad home with family to go to a good home with strangers. Of course as they begin to assimilate and feel safe and cared for a bond develops. When parental rights are terminated 78 Percent of Foster child adoptions are by foster parents who step up if there are no available or willing relatives and give those children a forever home and family.

Very vivid wording. I could really feel the dispair of the child realizing that there was no home to return to.
